Research (write down the words and defintions you were responsible for finding as well as the questions and answers)

  • Mady: Salivary Glands is a gland that scretes saliva, especially any of the three pairs of large glands, the parotid, submaxilarc, and sublingual, whose secretions enter the mouth and mingle in saliva.

  • Emily: Carbohydrate~ A source of food and energy for animals it contains Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen.

  • Monica-- Enzyme-It's a substance produced in plant or animal cells that causes a chemical change in other substances but is not changed itself.
--Absorbtion-something that is able to pick up moisture.
--Why can't you "supposedly" eat 6 saltine crackers in 1 minute?- You can't eat 6 saltine crackers in 1 minute because 1 saltine cracker absorbs 60 times more saliva than a human can produce in 1 minute and you still have to eat 5 more crackers.

  • Ally-
Question:How can you increase saliva productuion? Answer: Some things that might work are chewing gum, drinking a lot of water, and sucking on some ice.
Question: How much saliva does a typical “normal” person produce? Answer: a normal person produces… DAY-2 quarts ; WEEK-14 quarts; MONTH-60 quarts; YEAR- 720 quarts
(definition of)Saliva: The watery liquid produced in the mouth by certain glands.

  • Rozalia--
Salt: contians about 97% to 99% of sodium chloride. Question: What causes you to produce saliva? Your salivary glands normally produce about 1 to 3 pints (0.5 to 1.5 litars) a day.

SMALL SCALE TEST

--Question: Can we eat six saltine crackers in one minute?
--Variables: The variables for our small scale test is what we ate/drank before testing the expirament to see if we would get different results.
--Hypothesis: If we eat or drink stuff before we at the crackers then we can eat more because, were producing more saliva.
--Materials: Camera, Timer, Crackers, Juice, Picklechips, Water.
--Procedure:
1st~ We eat or drink stuff before
2nd~ We start the timer and eat the crackers
3rd~ We video tape it and do it again for 3 trials

Small Scale Conclusion

Claim:for trial 1 drinking grape juice, and water and eating pickle chips before we ate the saltines didnt work. but it worked for when we ate them plain. for trial 2 drinking grape juice and the water before we ate the saltines. We changed the stuff that we ate/ drank before experiment. What we changed was the pickle chips to the water then to the grape juice and then just eating them plain.

Evidence: For Trial 1 When we tried to drink grape juice and water it didnt work and when we tried to eat pickle chips it didnt work either until we tried it eating them plain then it worked, but for trial 2 it worked when we drank grape juice and water before we ate the crackers, but it dint work when we ate them with the pickle chips or eating them plain.

Explanation: This happened because the water dried up your mouth so did the pickle chips, but the grape juice helped getting it downbecause it made your mouth watery and and it helped, also eating it plain was just luck because it kind of dried out your mouth but surprisingly it worked. Another result was your throat/uvila hurt really bad after we did experiment.

Large Scale Test

--Question: Can I Eat Six Saltine Crackers In 1 Minute?
--Material :Crackers, Timer,Camera
--Independent: How many crackers you eat at a time.
--Dependent: How many crackers are completed in 1 minute.
--Hypothesis: I think if we more than 1 cracker at a time and chew fast then we should be able to finish six saltine crackers in 1 minute because you would be eating fast and getting more than one down at a time.
--Procedure:
Step 1: Set timer for 1 minute
Step 2: Get 6 saltine crackers
Step 3: Eat as many crackers as you can in 1 minute
Step 4: When timer is up see how many crackers they ate

Large Scale Conclusion

--Claim: Eating six plain crackers in one minute does not work because, my mouth gets to dry and there is very little time to complete them without creating saliva. I think if we extended the time by 30 seconds i could complete the crackers.
--Evidence: In all the trials eating six plain saltine crackers did not work because her mouth became very dry which made it complicated to eat them faster, so the best way would be to create saliva before or drink a lot of water.
--Explanation: I think the 2nd trial got off because she finished all six crackers, i think she did something different and she didn't know it.

The Myth is Confirmed because something got changed in the 2nd trial unlike the 1st and 3rd trial they were close to eachother. I think the tip i gave her she followed through. The tip was when you feel room stick more in your mouth which would make her eat more and be able to finish the crackers
